Allie Jensen Memorial Gallery with Anthony Corraro
Allie Jensen Memorial Gallery with Anthony Corraro
April 3, 2026 | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us the exhibit opening by printmaker and illustrator Anthony Corraro.
Anthony Corraro is a printmaker and illustrator currently based out of Kansas City, MO. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Oklahoma State University in 2015 and his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Wichita State University in 2024. Born and raised in Tulsa, Anthony grew up with a strong connection to the LGBTQAI+ community there. Through the now-closed Openarms Youth Project, he found a community that was supportive of his own journey of self-discovery and provided opportunities for him to pay that compassion forward. As a non-binary artist, he seeks to critique systems of thinking based on false dichotomies. His work resists concepts that rely on opposing static ideals in favor of a more nuanced and dynamic understanding. Anthony draws a great deal of inspiration from Eastern philosophy and queer theory to deconstruct and investigate traditional concepts of individuality and social constructions.
Artist Statement: In this series, I aim to represent members of Tulsa's LGBTQAI+ community as individuals who have served as role models through their compassion, strength, and resilience. With the current trajectory of State and Federal laws, I have grown increasingly concerned for my friends and family who are at risk of losing their voices, their rights, and even their lives. Due to scapegoating and misunderstanding, these people who are invaluable parts of the Tulsa community have become demonized.
The portraits in this series are sourced from individuals within Tulsa who identify as LGBTQAI+; although not all are well-known public figures, these individuals' everyday acts of support and care are what sustain the fabric of Tulsa's queer community. They each hold unique stories and experiences, and this project is meant to express how their lives intersect with Tulsa in countless ways. Through their advocacy, art, labor, and aid, they shape the city in ways that are often unseen but deeply felt.
The portraits are made of loose dust, an amalgamation of different elements that come together to create something beautiful but susceptible to the slightest breeze or touch. My intention is not to show the vulnerability of the people themselves but rather to represent the precarious situation that they are in. The conditions surrounding queer life are ever-changing with policy, rhetoric, and public perception threatening to disperse what has been carefully built. Yet despite seemingly non-stop attempts to silence and oppress, the presence and stories of these individuals will endure throughout time. It is my hope to express just a fraction of that impact through this work and to offer recognition to those in the community who have remained strong for so long and will continue to do so no matter what may come.

Polyester
Polyester is a 1981 American satirical black comedy film written, produced, and directed by John Waters, and starring Divine, Tab Hunter, Edith Massey, David Samson, Mary Garlington, Ken King, Mink Stole, Joni Ruth White, and Stiv Bators. It satirizes the melodrama film genre and the "woman's film" category, particularly the work of Douglas Sirk, which directly influenced this film. The film is also a satire of suburban life in the early 1980s, involving topics such as divorce, abortion, adultery, alcoholism, racial stereotypes, foot fetishism, and the religious right.
Polyester was filmed in Waters' native Baltimore, Maryland, like all of his previous films. It featured a gimmick called Odorama, whereby moviegoers could smell what they were viewing on-screen with special scratch-and-sniff cards (a stylistic tribute to the work of William Castle, whose films typically featured attention-grabbing gimmicks).
One free Odorama card with each ticket purchase.

Hairspray (1988)
Hairspray is a 1988 American musical comedy film written and directed by John Waters, starring Sonny Bono, Ruth Brown, Divine, Debbie Harry, Ricki Lake in her film debut, and Jerry Stiller, with special appearances by Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora. Hairspray was a dramatic departure from Waters's earlier works, with a much broader intended audience. Hairspray's PG is the least restrictive rating a Waters film has received; most of his previous films were rated X by the MPAA. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, the film revolves around self-proclaimed "pleasantly plump" teenager Tracy Turnblad as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV show and rallies against racial segregation.
Hairspray was a moderate success upon its initial theatrical release, earning $8 million. However, it managed to attract a larger audience on home video in the early 1990s. The film received critical acclaim and ranks at No. 444 on Empire magazine's 2008 list of the 500 greatest films of all time. This is Divine's final film released during his lifetime. He died three weeks after its release.
